Annual Juried Exhibition
October 13 - November 21, 2010
The National Capital Area Chapter and the National Board of Directors invite you to enter the 47th Annual Juried Exhibition to be held at the Workhouse Arts Center, Lorton, Virginia.
PURPOSE:The purpose of the exhibition is to publicly show the best current East Asian brush paintings and calligraphy and to further the Society’s mission.
AWARDS: A combination of cash and other awards approximating $3,500.00 in value, will be awarded.
ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to all artists.
ENTRIES must be
1. Brush painting or calligraphy must be in Asian ink, or Asian ink and watercolor on rice* paper or silk.*Generic term for those papers traditionally used for East Asian brush painting, but not limited to those containing rice fiber.
2. Nontraditional paintings must be executed with water-soluble Asian ink with or without watercolor on rice paper, gold and silver papers, shikishi boards or silk. The predominant element must be ink and direct brushwork on the base; however, techniques such as monoprinting, suminagashi, spraying, or non-relief collage may be incorporated. If you used one of these techniques, note it on the entry form next to “Painting - Title”.
3. Paintings and calligraphy must be the original creation and composition of the artist submitting it. Copying a painting by another artist or teacher, with a few details changed, is not considered an original work. No touch-ups, changes, or additions by another artist or teacher are allowed.
4. Paintings and calligraphy must be painted within the last two years and not previously exhibited in a Sumi-e Society annual exhibition. Previous entry elsewhere is permitted.
5. Entries will be accepted only from the artist, not by or through agents.
ENTRIES WHICH REQUIRE A SIGNATURE FOR DELIVERY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

DIGITAL ENTRIES:
1. Each entrant may submit two (2) entries per category for jurying.
2.Digital entry files must be in JPEG format on a CD (compact disc). Submit two (2) images per entry.
1. low resolution for viewing at 72 pixels per inch with no dimension exceeding 1024 pixels or 15 inches;
2. high resolution for the catalog at 300 pixels per inch with no dimension exceeding 2100 pixels or 7 inches.
The image must be oriented correctly (vertical or horizontal).
Title the image file: artist last name, first initial, title.jpg
Ex: SmithJTulips.jpg
Do not use spaces or any punctuation except- .jpg at end.
3. Works must be wet mounted, signed and sealed before
photographing. Show only the image, no frame or mat.
Digital image should accurately portray the original art.
4. Label your CD using a permanent marker, with your
name and the title of the painting/calligraphy and framed
dimensions.
Ex: John Smith “Spring Tulips-Rainy Day” 20” x 30”

5. A 4” x 6” hard copy print of the image must accompany
the digital entry. Include on back of paper:
Artist’s Name, Title, Image Size and Top indicated.
6. Artwork with calligraphy other than signature or date must be accompanied by a Standard Chinese (typed or written)and a typed English translation of the calligraphy.
7. The CD will not be returned.

Fees cover all entries, up to two (2) per category, four (4) per entrant.

ENTRY FORM: Digital images must be listed on the
entry form and be accompanied by the entry fee,
a 4”x 6”
print of each image and a stamped self-addressed #10
(business) envelope with adequate postage.
DO NOT SEPARATE THE ENTRY AND NOTIFICATION FORMS!
FRAMING SPECIFICATIONS: All paintings must be framed and under acrylic or Plexiglas, ready to hang. Do not use glass. Framing used must be strong enough to withstand all necessary handling. Due to their durability metal sectional frames in silver, gold, pewter, gray or white are highly recommended.
MATS:
Outer mats should also be a light, neutral color. No black or dark color mats
will be accepted.
Hanging scrolls will not be accepted.
SIZE REQUIREMENTS:
Maximum framed size - 42 x 42 inches
Minimum framed size - 16 x 16 inches
Works that do not meet these specifications will be disqualified, even if initially accepted.
JURYING: Digital images will be juried for inclusion in the exhibition, using accepted standards of East Asian brush painting. Artists, whose works are accepted, will ship the original work for the judging of awards and inclusion in the exhibition. The Sumi-e Society reserves the right to refuse any artwork that it deems improperly presented, unsafe, damaged, or not the same as represented in the digital image submitted for judging. No withdrawals or substitutions will be accepted after a work is juried into the exhibition.

A notification card will be mailed to each entrant, not later than Monday August 15, 2010 indicating which works were accepted or declined. The Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. is not responsible for lost, stolen, or misdirected entries.
Artists who fail to provide work accepted into the show will not be permitted to enter the national show the following year.
DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORKS: Accepted works must arrive at the Workhouse between October 5 - 8. Works must be shipped prepaid with prepaid arrangements for return shipping provided in reusable packing cases such as Airfloat, Strongbox. The carrier selected must deliver to: LIABILITY: Every care will be taken by the Society, the Lorton Arts Foundation/Workhouse Arts Center, their members or agents. However, no liability is assumed for loss or damage from whatever cause. It is the responsibility of the artists to insure their artwork.
RETURN OF WORKS: Shipped works will be returned to the artists at the end of the exhibition beginning the week of November 23, 2010. Hand delivered work will be picked up Sunday, Nov. 21, noon-5. Complete return shipping instructions will be included with your notification card.
SALES: All works on exhibit will be offered for sale, unless marked NFS. No painting may be removed during the exhibition period. A commission of 40% will be collected by the Lorton Arts Foundation with all proceeds benefitting the Workhouse Arts Center and a donation of 5% should be made to Sumi-e Society of America, Inc for sold works. CATALOG: The Exhibition Catalog will be sent to all Society members. Copies will be available from the Sumi-e Society for $5.00 in the US, $6.00 to Canada and Mexico, and $7.00 outside North America by airmail. LAMPO LEONG JUROR
Professor LAMPO LEONG Ph.D.
Lampo Leong is an internationally renowned painter and calligrapher who received his BFA in brush painting from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, MFA in painting from the California College of the Arts, and Ph.D. in Art Theory from the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Dr. Leong is currently a professor in painting and drawing at the University of Missouri-Columbia and a former Art Department Chair. He has also influenced thousands of students through more than 110 lectures across the U.S., China, and Taiwan at institutions such as the University of California at Berkeley, Stanford University, the University of Minnesota, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and the National Taiwan Normal University. Leong has served as juror for over 25 art competitions, such as those for the San Francisco Art Commission, the Missouri Arts Council, and the Best of America national juried exhibition. Leong’s own work has been featured in museums and galleries worldwide through more than 58 solo and over 290 national/international juried/curated group exhibitions and has received 43 awards, including a Gold Medal at the Creative Quarterly fine arts competition in New York, a Gold Medal at the XV Exposicao Colectiva dos Artistas de Macau, and the Front Cover Award in New Art International published in New York.
Included in over 80 biographical references, Leong is cited in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who in the World, The International Contemporary Master, and Creative Genius: 100 Contemporary Artists. His achievements have been featured in more than 900 reviews and publications in newspapers, magazines, art books, websites, and on TV internationally, including a PBS documentary. Leong has been recognized in the US Congressional Record, and, in 1999, San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown proclaimed November 19th to be Lampo Leong Day.
Leong’s works are found among 15 museums and hundreds of corporate and private collections worldwide, such as The Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University, the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Museu de Arte de Macau, and Guangdong Museum of Art. Leong’s 26-foot-diameter granite inset calligraphic medallion is permanently installed in a San Francisco public park.
