Annual Juried Exhibition
July 18 to August 23, 2008
The National Board of Directors of the Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. invites submissions for the 45th Annual Juried Exhibition to be held at the Strathmore Hall Arts Center, North Bethesda, Maryland.
PURPOSE: The purpose of the exhibition is to publicly show the best current East Asian brush paintings and calligraphy and to further the Society's mission.
AWARDS: A combination of cash and other awards approximating $4,500.00 in value, will be awarded.
ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to all artists.
ENTRIES must be
1. Brush painting or calligraphy must be in Asian ink, or Asian ink and watercolor on rice* paper or silk. *Generic term for those papers traditionally used for East Asian brush painting, but not limited to those containing rice fiber.
2. Nontraditional paintings must be executed with water- soluble Asian ink with or without watercolor on rice paper, gold and silver papers, shikishi boards or silk. The predominant element (at least 60%) must be direct brushwork on the base; however, techniques such as monoprinting, suminagashi, spraying, or non-relief collage may be incorporated. If you used one of these techniques, note it on the entry form next to "Painting/Title".
3. Paintings and calligraphy must be the original creation and composition of the artist submitting it. Copying a painting by another artist or teacher, with a few details changed, is not considered an original work. No touch-ups, changes, or additions by another artist or teacher are allowed.
4. Paintings and calligraphy must be painted within the last two years and not previously exhibited in a Sumi-e Society annual exhibition. Previous entry elsewhere is permitted.
5. Entries will be accepted only from the artist, not by or through agents.
ENTRIES WHICH REQUIRE A SIGNATURE FOR DELIVERY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

SLIDE ENTRIES:
1. Each entrant may submit two (2) entries per category for jurying.
2. Submit two (2) duplicate 35-mm slides per entry.
3. Works must be wet mounted, signed and sealed before photographing.
4. The image should fill the frame or be masked if it is a different proportion. Works should be placed against a neutral, medium to dark gray, or black background with no framing or matting visible in the slide. Raw edges must be masked when photographed or with silver tape on the slide.
5. The quality of the slides is critical. Poor quality slides will be rejected prior to consideration by the juror.
6. Each slide must show on the front: Artist's Name; Title; Height & Width of the work in inches when framed, Year Painted , and the Top indicated by an arrow pointing up.

Fees cover all entries, up to two (2) per category, four (4) per entrant.

ENTRY FORM: Slides must be listed on the entry form and be accompanied by
(1) entry fee;
(2) a stamped self-addressed #10 (business) envelope with adequate postage.
DO NOT SEPARATE THE ENTRY AND NOTIFICATION FORMS!
FRAMING SPECIFICATIONS: All paintings must be framed and under acrylic or Plexiglas, ready to hang. Framing used must be strong enough to withstand all necessary handling. Due to their durability metal sectional frames in silver, gold, pewter, gray or white are highly recommended.
MATS: Outer mats should also be a light, neutral color. No black or dark color mats will be accepted. Hanging scrolls will not be accepted.
SIZE REQUIREMENTS:
Maximum framed size - 42 x 42 inches
Minimum framed size - 16 x 16 inches
Works that do not meet these specifications will be disqualified, even if initially accepted.
JURYING: Slides will be juried for inclusion in the exhibition, using accepted standards of East Asian brush painting. Artists, whose works are accepted, will ship the original work for the judging of awards and inclusion in the exhibition. Works that do not, in the Judge's view, meet the quality apparent in the slide, may be disqualified. No withdrawals or substitutions will be accepted after a work is juried into the exhibition.

A notification card will be mailed to each entrant, not later than Wednesday, May 7, 2008, indicating which works were accepted or declined. Slides of accepted works are retained. Slides of declined works will be returned with the notification card. The Sumi-e Society of America, Inc. is not responsible for lost, stolen, or misdirected entries.Artists who fail to provide work accepted into the show will not be permitted to enter the national show the following year.

DELIVERY OF ACCEPTED WORKS:
Accepted works must be shipped in time to arrive at the warehouse between
July 7 - 11. Works must be shipped prepaid, in reusable packing cases
such as Airfloat, Strongbox. The carrier selected must deliver to:

LOCAL DELIVERY:
Hand delivered works will be accepted at Strathmore Hall
July 12, between 10 am and 12 noon.
LIABILITY:Every care will be taken by the Society, its members
or agents. However, no liability is assumed for loss or damage from whatever cause.
RETURN OF WORKS: Shipped works will be returned to the owners
at the end of the exhibition beginning the week of August 25, 2008.
Complete return shipping instructions will be included with your
notification card.
SALES:
All works on exhibit will be offered for sale, unless marked NFS.
No painting may be removed during the exhibition period. A commission
of 30% will be collected by Strathmore Hall and a donation of 5% is
requested to Sumi-e Society of America, Inc for sold works.
CATALOG:
A copy of the Exhibition Catalog will be sent to all Society members. Copies
will be available from the Sumi-e Society, postage paid, for $5.00 in the US,
$6.00 to Canada and Mexico, and $7.00 outside North America by airmail.

JURORS
Painting Judge: M. STEPHEN DOHERTY M. Stephen Doherty is presently Editor-in-Chief of a family of
art magazines that include American Artist, Watercolor, American
Artist DRAWING, and American Artist Workshop. He received a
BA from Knox College, Galesburg, Illinois, where he graduated in
1970 with honors in art, and a Masters in Fine Arts from Cornell
University in 1972. He is the author of a number of books on art and
artists including Dynamic Still Lifes in Watercolor, 1983, Developing
Ideas in Artwork, 1988, and The Artist in Nature: Thomas
Kinkade and the Plein Air Tradition, 2003. He has also written
numerous articles for the magazines he edits and other publications,
and dozens of essays for catalogues published by museums
and commercial galleries. He has judged hundreds of exhibitions
and lectured to many art groups, students and professional organizations
including the New York Academy of Art, the Toledo Museum
of Art, and the Portrait Society of America.
Calligraphy Judge: LIANG WEI
Liang Wei is an internationally acclaimed artist. Born in China, he
studied painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He is
presently a resident artist in the Torpedo Factory Art Center in
Alexandria, Virginia. He specializes in contemporary East Asian
Brush painting and calligraphy. His paintings of birds, trees and
flowers incorporate a unique and harmonious blend of traditional
Chinese and modern approaches to the natural world.
Liang Wei's work has been shown in numerous solo and group
shows in museums and galleries including the Cork Gallery at
Lincoln Centre, and the Westbeth Gallery One in New York, the
Yale-China Association at Yale University, the New Britain
Museum of American Art, the Hartford Art School Gallery, the New
London Art Society and Gallery, the John Slade Ely House in New
Haven, Connecticut, the Greater Reston Arts Center in Reston,
Virginia, the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Washington, DC,
and the Target Gallery in the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Among
his numerous awards are six Best in Show, and First Place in Watercolor
for Best of Virginia Artists and Artisans.
His calligraphy has been featured in a number of Chinese publications
and on the jackets of several books such as The Search for
Modern China, by Yale historian Jonathan Spence, and Furrows,
by Yale anthropologist, Helen Siu.
